Transit Insurance for Your Move: What Is Covered and What Is Not
Most customers assume their belongings are fully protected during a move. The details matter enormously โ here is everything you need to know about transit insurance in India.
Transit insurance is one of the most misunderstood aspects of a professional relocation. Many customers assume that because a moving company offers insurance, everything is fully covered. In reality, the scope of coverage varies enormously โ and understanding the details before your move can save you significant money and frustration if something goes wrong.
What Is Transit Insurance
Transit insurance is a policy that covers the loss of or damage to your goods while they are being transported from your origin address to your destination. It is issued either by the moving company as an in-house policy or through a third-party insurer. Transit insurance is separate from your household contents insurance, which typically covers belongings only at your home address โ not while in transit.
Basic vs Comprehensive Transit Insurance
Basic transit insurance is typically included in the moving quote by reputable companies. It covers major incidents โ fire, vehicle accidents, or total loss โ but usually at a depreciated value rather than replacement value. For most standard household items, this provides adequate protection.
Comprehensive transit insurance covers the full replacement value of your goods. This is strongly recommended for electronics, artwork, antiques, jewellery, musical instruments, and luxury goods. The cost is typically 0.5% to 1% of the total declared goods value โ a very reasonable premium for complete peace of mind.
What Is Typically Covered
- Damage caused by a vehicle accident during transit
- Fire damage affecting the transport vehicle
- Theft of the entire consignment from the vehicle
- Natural disasters affecting the transport route in most comprehensive policies
- Total loss of goods in an extreme incident
What Is Typically NOT Covered
- Pre-existing damage: If an item was already damaged before packing, insurance will not cover it โ this is why pre-move photography is essential
- Improper packing by the owner: If you packed items yourself and they are damaged, most policies will not cover this
- Fragile items unless specially noted: Many basic policies exclude glassware, ceramics, and electronics unless specifically listed with an additional premium
- Cash, jewellery, and documents: These are typically excluded from standard transit insurance โ keep them with you personally during the move
- Items that are undeclared or undervalued: Claims are settled at the declared value โ if you declared a lower figure to reduce the premium, any payout will reflect that lower figure
How to File a Claim Successfully
If you discover damage after your move, act immediately. Take detailed photographs of the damaged items. Report the damage to the moving company in writing within 24-48 hours of delivery โ most policies have a very short claim window, and late reports are typically rejected. Keep all original packing materials, as the insurer may inspect them. Provide your consignment number, delivery receipt, and photographs when filing.
