10 Packing Hacks Professional Movers Never Tell You

Insider packing tips straight from Udaan's professional crews — save time, reduce breakage, and make your moving day far more efficient.

Professional movers pack hundreds of homes every year. Over time they develop techniques that make the job faster, safer, and less stressful. Here are ten of the best hacks that most movers keep to themselves — and how you can use them on your own move.

The Sock and Glass Trick

Before packing stemware and glasses, slip each one into a clean sock. The sock acts as a built-in protective layer that prevents glass-on-glass contact. Place glasses upright in boxes — never upside down — and fill any gaps with crumpled paper or bubble wrap. This one hack significantly reduces glassware breakage on every move.

Use Clothing to Pad Fragile Items

Instead of buying extra bubble wrap, use soft clothing — t-shirts, jumpers, and thick socks — to wrap fragile items like vases, photo frames, and small appliances. You save money on materials and every centimetre of packing space is used efficiently. Professional crews have been doing this for years.

Cling Wrap Open Drawers

For dressers and bedside tables with loose drawers, remove the drawers, keep the contents inside them, and wrap the entire unit tightly with cling film. The drawers stay shut, the contents stay organised, and you save hours of repacking at the other end.

Sandwich Bags for Small Hardware

When disassembling furniture — beds, wardrobes, shelving units — put all screws, bolts, and small fittings into a labelled zip-lock bag. Tape the bag directly to the piece of furniture it belongs to. You will never spend twenty minutes hunting for the right bolt at your new home again.

Fill Empty Spaces with Socks and Underwear

Every gap in a box allows items to shift and break during transit. Fill all gaps with rolled socks and underwear — soft enough to protect nearby items and small enough to fit into any corner. Your clothes make the journey in the same boxes as your fragile items.

Take a Photo Before You Unplug

Before disconnecting your TV, entertainment system, or desktop computer, take a detailed photograph of all the cables plugged in at the back. Setting everything up again at your new home is effortless when you have a clear reference — no guessing, no troubleshooting, no calls to a technician.

Pack Plates Vertically Like Vinyl Records

This is counterintuitive but extremely effective. Plates packed vertically — standing on their edges rather than stacked flat — are far less likely to break in transit. The force of impact is distributed along the edge rather than across the face. Wrap each plate individually before packing vertically in a sturdy box.

Use Your Largest Luggage for Heavy Items

Suitcases have wheels — use them. Pack your heaviest items — books, tools, weights — into rolling luggage so they can be wheeled in and out without anyone straining their back. Books in a moving box are deceptively heavy; books in a wheeled suitcase are a completely different story.

Label on the Sides Not the Top

Most people label their boxes on the top. But when boxes are stacked three high, you can only read the label on the very top box. Label every box clearly on at least two sides — that way, no matter how the boxes are stacked or arranged in the truck, every box is immediately identifiable.

Pack a First Night Box and Keep It With You

The last box you pack should be the first thing you open at your new home. This box — which rides in your car, not the truck — should contain: phone chargers, toiletries, a change of clothes for everyone in the family, any medication, snacks, the kettle and a few mugs, toilet paper, and a basic toolkit. You will thank yourself before the movers have even finished unloading.
